Berlin: from the airport to the city center

Location

Located 8 km north of Berlin city centre, is the main airport for major airlines and hub for domestic flights as well.

Means of transport

Berlin has a very well organized transportation system. You can reach every part of the city by using either the buses, or the metro (U-Bahn) and the suburban railway (S-Bahn). The metro is quite old and a bit slow for long distances, so if you prefer to admire all the beauties of the city during your trip, we suggest you to prefer the S-Bahn which is much faster.

Alexanderplatz

It's the most famous square of Berlin. This large square was the centre of the East Berlin before the reunion of the city. It now represents the largest square in Berlin and is dominated by the impressive Fernsehturm (tv tower) which is located in the centre of the square. Berlin in one day step by step

The most prestigious of Berlin's thoroughfares is Unter den Linden which stretches from Pariser Platz to Schlossplatz in the heart of former East Berlin. Bebelplatz. Bebelplatz is dominated by the curiously-shaped Dome of St. Hedwig's Cathedral, which was designed along the lines of the Pantheon in Rome. Set in the middle of the square is a memorial to the Nazi 'book-burning' campaign. On the opposite side of Unter den Linden is the Staatsbibliothek (Prussian State Library), the flagship of all Berlin libraries.

3-day view of Berlin: a more elaborate approach

Day 1

• Begin your day by making a long walk around the streets of East Berlin. Everything starts from Alexanderplatz. This large square , represents one of the most central parts of the town and is really the ideal starting point.
  
• The Berliner Rathaus (City Hall) – seat of government for the Mayor of Berlin – is located somewhat towards the back of the square and is known locally as the Rotes Rathaus (Red Town Hall) not because of any political tendencies but because of its red brick façade!
• In the heart of the square you will find yourself glancing with enthusiasm at the giant Fernsehturm(tv tower). Try to climb up the tower by using the elevators, but be prepared to wait because the tower is one of the most popular sites in the city. The tower offers a magnificent view of the entire city. • Before leaving the square, don't forget to visit the magnificent Marienkirche which is located in the shadow of the Fernsehturm. It's one of the most interesting churches in the city.The church is open every day from 10.00 to 21.00 (10.00 t0 18.00 October to March) end there is no admission fee. Potsdam is the town where palaces and gardens never end!!! Stay one day or more here and enjoy every bit of the culture and architecture of the city.

• Sanssouci Palace (Altes Schloss) The palace was used by Frederick the Great as summer residence. It was the place where the king enjoyed his privacy without having to worry about anything (ohne Sorgen). The palace was constructed based on the king's ideas and it was completed in 1747 by Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff.
